Happy to be back in Klagenfurt!

After eighteen exciting and educational months abroad I’ve now returned back home to Klagenfurt and the Department of Informatics Systems after travelling over 18,000 kilometres from Christchurch in New Zealand. My visit in New Zealand started in July 2008 when I received an Erwin-Schrödinger scholarship from FWF, The Austrian Science Fund, to conduct research on desktop interfaces at the HCI & Multimedia Lab at the University of Canterbury. After long hours and days in the hosting lab, thinking, prototyping and t

esting on how to re-design and make current desktop tools–such as task switching interfaces (e.g. the Microsoft XP Taskbar and Alt+Tab tool), pull-down menus and toolbars–easier to learn and more efficient and fun to use, I had the opportunity to explore the magnificent scenery of New Zealand, Australia and Cook Islands.

How to make software engineers more productive

Given the number of software-engineers who are working at Google, speeding up the development cycles is a prime goal. Saving an hour of time at a routine task will quickly scale up to saving a couple of person-years. For this purpose, there is a separate team of „Engineering Productivity“ specialists at Google, who analyse the way we develop software, and try to improve the quality of the code, and speed up build-, test- and release-cycles. They are looking for places where time is „lost“, where automation in the development process is helpful and how it best can be achieved, and just how much testing needs to be done for individual components. This talk will describe what an engineering productivity specialist at Google would spend his time with, what tools and techniques he is using and how the group impacted a large number of products“.

Markus studied Applied Computer Science at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, where he also completed his PhD in Software Engineering. After working as a Jr. Lecturer at the University Klagenfurt and various consulting jobs in Austria, Markus worked as a Senior Researcher and Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Software Quality Research Lab in Ireland where he researched test data generation from formal specifications.
Markus is particularly interested in speeding up the development of good quality software. This includes anything ranging from agile development, formal specifications, to large scale build- and test-systems.

MULTIHARMONIC FINITE ELEMENT SOLVERS

The talk is devoted to fast iterative solvers for frequency-domain finite element equations approximating linear and nonlinear parabolic initial boundary value problems as well as eddy current problems arising in electromagnetics with time-harmonic excitations. Switching from the time domain to the frequency domain allows us to replace the expensive time integration procedure by the solution of a simple

linear elliptic system for the amplitudes belonging to the sine- and to the cosine-excitation or a large nonlinear elliptic system for the Fourier coefficients in the linear and nonlinear case, respectively. The fast solution of the corresponding linear and nonlinear system of finite element equations is crucial for the competitiveness of this method in comparison with standard time integration methods.

Modellierung 2010

24. bis 26. März – Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt

Die Fachtagung „Modellierung„ wird vom Querschnittfachausschuss Modellierung der GI seit 1998 durchgeführt. Die Tagungssprache ist deutsch.

Die „Modellierung“ zeichnet sich durch lebendige Diskussionen und engagierte Rückmeldungen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis aus. Besondere Themen und Interessen werden durch spezielle Workshops abgedeckt. Zum traditionell rege besuchten Industrieforum kommt 2010 zum zweiten Mal ein Doktorandensymposium hinzu, bei dem NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen die Gelegenheit gegeben wird, vor einem engagierten Kollegium ihre Ideen und Forschungsansätze vorzutragen und so richtungweisende Ratschläge zu erhalten. Um darüber hinaus die Beteiligung junger WissenschaftlerInnen an der Tagung zu erhöhen, wird für den besten Beitrag, der aus einer Abschlussarbeit hervorgegangen ist, ein Preis vergeben.

Rückblick 3D Video: From Stereo to Multi-View

Am 10. März hat Dr. Karsten Müller einen Vortrag zu „3D Video: From Stereo to Multi-View„ gehalten mit dem folgendem Inhalt: „3D related media technologies have recently developed from pure research-oriented work towards applications and products. 3D content is now being produced on a wider scale and first 3D applications have been standardized, such as multi-view video coding for 3D Blu Ray disks. This development was only possible due to joined international research and development work on all stages of the 3D media chain from data capturing via transmission and coding to multi-view displays with different application areas for digital cinema, home entertainment and mobile services.“

Einreichfrist verlängert für Förderpreis der Technischen Fakultät: 31. März 2010

Prämierung der besten Diplom- bzw. Magisterarbeiten aller Studien der Technischen Fakultät an der Universität Klagenfurt.

Der Preis besteht aus einer Urkunde und einer Prämie in Höhe von EUR 1.500,–.

Es werden nur Diplom- bzw. Magisterarbeiten bewertet, die im Zeitraum vom 1. November 2008 bis zum 31. Oktober 2009 fertig

Rückblick: inf2school 2010

ca. 70 Lehrerinnen und Lehrer der unterschiedlichsten Schultypen aus ganz Österreich nahmen am 25./26. Februar an der Lehrerweiterbildungsveranstaltung inf2school – Informatik und Informationstechnik an der Universität Klagenfurt teil.

Das Interesse an den angebotenen Workshops und der Elan der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer war groß.
