R&D Engineer at BBC (Video Compression)

Full job description available here.

Department

As an R&D Engineer with extensive understanding of signal processing and video coding, and direct experience with standard compression schemes, including H.264/AVC, as well as corresponding reference software, you will be in your element in our world-class R&D team that has a track-record of innovating pioneering technology. This position is available as a Senior Engineer or Engineer level dependant on your level of relevant experience.

BBC Research & Development is part of the BBC Future Media (FM) Division. R&D has a worldwide reputation for contributing and leading the engineering research and development of many of the key broadcast technologies that have been introduced over the last 50 years. The research work is mainly on new technologies which are expected to be rolled out over a 1 to 5 year timescale and they require both in depth theoretical knowledge and also a practical approach to potential deployment.

Role

You will join our Video Compression Research (VCR) team. VCR is situated within the Distribution Core Technologies (DCT) section of R&D, which focuses on fundamental signal processing for broadcast, mobile and whitespace applications.

We have extensive experience in developing video compression technologies and standards, including MPEG-2 and the Dirac open source video codec. The current focus of the team is on developing algorithms and technology for JCT-VC High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the next-generation video compression standard. HEVC has a target of doubling the efficiency of the current state of the art for HDTV and UHDTV video. The role will place you at the heart of the international standardisation process, working with the world’s leading technology organisations to develop state of the art technology, perform experiments and define the specification. You will have the opportunity to develop ideas as well as exploring the background around the subject matter with the depth and freedom that you may not otherwise be allowed in industry.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have extensive understanding of signal processing and video coding, and direct experience with standard compression schemes, including H.264/AVC, as well as corresponding reference software.
  • Extensive programming experience in C/C++ applied to image/video processing is required. Experience with UNIX development tools to conduct compression experiments is highly desirable.
  • A publication record in image/video research conferences and journals and contribution to video coding standardisation are highly desirable.
  • A PhD in a relevant field is an advantage. Experience with patent preparation is also beneficial.

**Please support your application by uploading any links to relevant written papers or documents that would highlight your suitability for this role. This can be done by uploading additional ‘other’ documents alongside your CV.**
